Many of you may not know it, but António Maia, born in Rio Maior north of Lisbon, has been a plastic artist and a journalist, devoting himself lately to painting and cartoons.
He has already printed several books of cartoons and Longest Fore is his most recent work, in which he expresses his own thoughts and ideas to take us into the world of golf.
He has done it through humor with golf cartoons, which gives the reader the opportunity for a lot of good laughs. At the same time, it is a useful tool to help you enjoy your game that much more, as you enjoy the great outdoors!
Playing golf can be sometimes an embarrassing and a serious business, as I well know, but the game has a healthy habit of standing back from time to time, and taking a side back look at itself, on the odds and weird behavior of its institutions and enthusiasts. This is precisely what this book does!
The author takes us from the invention of the warning «fore!» (apparently originating from the army of Imperial Rome!), throughout hilarious situations used by the players, like the one when the club members want to combat slow play!
The cartoons on this book express Maia’s obsession with the game of golf, which comes to be of vital importance for Portugal. On the end, what emerges is the author´s love of the game and his finest sense of humor. As it has been said before in a similar book, he emphasizes the traditions of one of the greatest outdoor activities that has been conceived by mankind: the indeed ancient & healthful exercise of golf!

Muitos de vós poderão não o saber, mas António Maia, nascido em Rio Maior, é um artista plástico e jornalista que ultimamente se tem dedicado à pintura e aos cartoons.
Já publicou vários livros de cartoons, sendo Longest Fore o seu trabalho mais recente, onde investe as suas ideias e pensamentos para nos levar ao mundo do golfe.
Fê-lo através de cartoons humoristas sobre o golfe, os quais oferecem ao leitor a oportunidade para várias boas gargalhadas. Ao mesmo tempo, este livro é um excelente meio para desfrutar do jogo ainda mais, tal como das excelentes vistas.
Bem sei que jogar golfe pode ser por vezes uma tarefa embaraçosa e séria. Porém, o jogo consegue distanciar-se, olhando de longe as incongruências das suas instituições e as excentricidades dos seus entusiastas. É precisamente isso que este livro desenvolve!
O autor leva-nos desde a invenção do aviso «fore!» (aparentemente pelo exército da Roma Imperial!) até várias situações cómicas vividas pelos jogadores, como quando os membros do clube pretendem contrariar o jogo lento!
Os cartoons deste livro traduzem a obsessão de António Maia pelo golfe, o qual ganhou grande importância em Portugal. Seja como for, no fundo, como já avancei, o que fica é a paixão do autor pelo jogo, e o seu sentido de humor, que realça as tradições de uma das mais fabulosas actividades de exterior alguma vez concebidas pelo Homem: o ancestral e saudável exercício do golfe.
